We were mostly caught up with the bulk of our chores a couple of days later, and in the late afternoon, I wanted us to take on something a bit less comfortable to think about. The guns had sat idle in the storage area, untouched and with little consideration. I felt it was time that all of us were introduced to them and learned how to use them in case we faced another frightening encounter with unknown arrivals.

Bailey stayed in camp with Katie as the rest of us walked far to the West end of the island. I still wanted her to feel secure if she had to use a weapon, but the reality was that she would likely be responsible for protecting Katie and getting her far away from any violence.

Nina and I set up a target made from heavy branches and large fronds from nearby plants. We scratched onto the leaves a rough bullseye, and Nina introduced us to the pistol first. She demonstrated how to hold it, how to check and release the safety, how to see if the gun was loaded, and how to remove and insert the clip. She repeated warnings about how to keep the firearm pointed down and away from anyone else, to only point it at someone you intended to kill. Nina was cold, the seriousness of the lesson not lost on any of us.

Keekah had made us primitive ear plugs from small bits of plastic sheeting and some wadding from one of the old blankets which had become too worn to patch again. They wouldn't give us complete protection, but they were better than nothing. Plugs in place, Nina stepped to her spot, aimed, and pulled the trigger.

The bang was so loud that I jumped, and I saw others do the same. Mie started giggling involuntarily, then seemed to understand just how serious that sound was. Nina fired again, and again, hitting near center each time. She flicked the safety back on, handed it to me, and I took my turn, less accurate than Nina but feeling more comfortable after a couple of shots.

One-by-one, we each fired a handful of bullets into the target, replacing the frond bullseye every couple of people. Some were better than others. Amy held her own with Nina's shots, and Tok was solid as well. Surprisingly, after a wild shot splashed into the water well to the right of the target, Mie's next two shots hit near the center, and she grinned at her results.

Keekah's aim was ok, and Kate did fine as well. Manu didn't have much luck, and Gale's aim was all over the place. Poln had a hard time keeping the gun at the right angle, but at least he got some practice hearing the deafening cracks and was less jumpy by the time we finished with the pistol.

Next up, Nina started on the compact automatic rifle. She showed us the safety, the magazines, how to switch from one shot mode into the three-round bursts, as well as full-automatic. After more cautions about the dangerousness of the weapon, the rifle crackled in her hands, sending several sprays of three bullets onto the target.

Again, we all gave it a try. I found it much harder to aim, but I imagined the effect was even more impressive had someone been on the other end. While I didn't know where the bullets might go with any serious accuracy, the spray meant I had a decent chance of hitting someone after a few bursts.

It was growing dark by the time we finished, and we packed up the gear and tossed our target into the trees. My ears were ringing for hours afterwards, and I know everyone else felt the same.

- - -

By morning, my hearing was back to normal, and checking with the others around breakfast, I could tell they felt the same. We talked about our experiences, and I felt satisfied that we'd met the initial requirements of our practice, namely to make everyone aware of the sounds and the adreniline which came from the weapons, and though most of us were not great shots, what mattered most was that, in a dire situation, I trusted myself and those around me to be more capable of picking up a gun and defending our family. I hoped it never came to that.

I noticed that Tok wore the shark's tooth necklace, and one was around Gale's neck as well. She caught me looking at it, smiled, then announced to everyone, “it's true! We've decided to make it official. He proposed to me as I was about to do the same to them. Kate, thank you for the necklaces, they're beautiful!”

I hadn't known she was making one for Gale as well, but I smiled at the thought that my wife had played a nice role in the private moments which Gale and Tok had shared.

Nina asked, “set a date?”

Gale shrugged, “whenever. We're not wanting anything fancy. Soon would be nice.”

Keekah chimed in, “I do the ceremony, like did for Kowl and Bailey. I do it!”

Tok grinned, said, “we'd like that.”

Though no date was set, it was generally agreed that we'd do it one evening after dinner, perhaps in the next few days. Bailey and Amy, along with Keekah, wanted to make Gale a dress, and Kate had a plan to make something for each of them, but refused to say just what.

- - -

The next morning, Bailey wanted to show me the ruins to the West again, said she'd dug around and found signs of an old refuse pile, scallop and oyster shells which had been overgrown, a small midden buried in sand, soil, and foliage. We would pick banana-fruits and the purple nuts on our way, and took along Amy to draw things in Bailey's notebook. Kate was eager to keep Katie with her around camp.

The ruins weren't so much old buildings as the remains of old stone circles, possibly part of the foundation or support system of primitive huts, most of them just under the surface of the soil. Bailey had found them months before while scouting the area, and it was the first proof we'd found of older communities living on the island. We'd later found further evidence on the north ridge, similar stone circles there as well.

Bailey showed me the midden, and while Amy made a new sketch of the layout of the stones and refuse pile, we dug around in the shells carefully, seeing if we might find anything of interest.

Mostly, we just found shells. There were tons of them, and the small mound was a tip of the iceberg to the volume now-buried underground. The deeper we went, the more we found. There were a few bones, as well. Possibly birds or small rodents, neither of us knew for sure.

We dug off to the side of the midden, back toward the three or four stone circles. We found more bones and less shells the further we went. Amy excused herself to urinate nearby while Bailey and I finished our dig and gave up on finding anything else that day.

Amy rushed up. “Kal... a boat!”

Bailey and I sprinted out onto the sand. Just on the horizon, to the Southwest, a black dot shimmered where I knew there was usually nothing but water. We watched it a moment, just a hint of motion showed it moving slightly East, but we couldn't tell if it was coming North as well. “Let's get back. Now!”

The three of us sprinted down the sand, our bags of banana-fruits and nuts left in the treeline. Halfway back we met Hakee who had raced towards us from camp. “Kal! A boat!”

“We saw. Let's get to camp!”

As the four of us ran, Hakee said, “everyone is ready to hide. Guns are out.” That last sentence sent a deep chill into my stomach, which clenched and felt tight.

The look of concern was obvious in Gale's face, her hands around a pistol. Tok held a rifle pointed towards the sand. I caught my breath, looked back to where the boat had obviously gotten closer and I thought I could see that it was moving towards the island at an angle. “Damp the fire, get them chewing, Tok. Prepare to go to the North quickly. Gale, get bags packed with water and supplies. Hurry!”

By the time it was obvious that the boat was coming straight towards our camp, Gale had already started leading Bailey, who carried Katie, Kate, Manu, Keekah, Poln, and Mie up the stream. I'd sent Nina as well, wanted her expertise with firearms to help protect them. I stayed behind with Tok, Amy, and Hakee.

The boat drew closer. It was an older wooden vessel, much like the one the Hahonokoans had arrived in all those months ago. The four of us hid in the treeline, rifle in my hands and in Tok's, Amy and Hakee holding pistols with white-knuckled grips.

We watched the boat anchor a couple of dozen yards off from shore, directly in front of our camp. I could see three or four dark figures on the deck, heard someone call out a couple of times, but the rising breeze kept either Tok or I from making out the words. A man jumped down from a rope ladder and swam quickly to shore.

I was sweating and tense, frightened. I didn't see a weapon in the man's hands, but any visitor to the island was considered hostile until we knew otherwise.

The man stopped near the fire pit, looked at it a second, then looked up to the huts. He called out in a language I didn't understand. Tok said, “his language is not mine, but I understand him. He asks where the people living here are.”

“Wait... don't answer.”

The man called again, longer this time. He wore only a pair of loose trousers, barefoot and bare-chested, dark skin glistening with water.

“He says he only wishes to meet us and offer to trade. He says he is from Uhonamona, an island two days Southwest of here. I have heard of this island, Kal.”

I thought a moment, unsure what to do. It was better to be defensive, but we'd have to do something soon. The man knew we were somewhere about, the smoking fire had been hastily covered and he must know that people were nearby. “Amy, Hakee. Hang back here. If he tries anything and you can get a clear shot, don't hesitate to shoot him. If anything happens to us otherwise, regroup with the others to the North. Understand?”

Amy whispered, “I'm not leaving you to be killed!”

“It won't come to that, but if he's hiding a weapon, he could kill us and come after you next. Don't take that chance. Promise me!”

She was reluctant but gave her word.

I nodded to Tok. He called out, whispered, “I told him we were coming out.”

We stepped slowly from the trees and stopped some distance from where the man stood. I held the rifle at an angle, fingers tight around the grips. Tok spoke to the man, translated as he did. “I asked him what he wanted, he says he wants to trade, asks if we have anything to trade, asks if we'll put down the guns.”

“Tell him... we'll sit and talk with him, that... we'll put down our guns but there are others hiding with more guns.” Tok relayed the message. The man nodded.

“He asks if his brother may join us as well. He is one of the men still on the boat. He says there are five of them in all, fishermen and traders. They wish to talk trade.”

I nodded, and the man called back to the boat. Another man climbed down the ladder and soon joined us, dressed similarly to the first man. Tok offered them seats around the pit, and I roused the fire and put on a pot of coffee. Tok poured cups of island wine, and we sipped a moment before the first man spoke again, Tok translating for me.

“His name is Kunomo, his brother is Kahan. The other men are on the boat are their sons. They are surprised to see a white man here. They thought all the white men were in the south or on the boats which pillaged their village. He has concerns that you are one of them.”

“Assure him that I am not, that we are peaceful and independent from the rest. Tell him that we are willing to discuss trade with them.”

Tok relayed my words, the men smiling then, drinking big gulps of the wine.

“He says the wine is excellent, wonders if we might include some in our trade.”

“What does he have to offer?”

Kunomo responded. “He has sacks of grain and preserved oranges and limes, dried fish, dried beans. He said he could also offer his two daughters.”

I laughed then cut off. “He's serious about his daughters?”

“Yes. He says that a few dozen of their village survived the bugs and the white men, four women to every man remain. He says they would be willing to come if the trade was fair.”

“Tell him we thank him for his offer, but I'm not comfortable with exchanging for people. We have enough fish of our own, but the beans, grain, and fruits would be very useful. What does he want in trade?”

Tok relayed the question, listened as Kunomo responded. “He is willing to consider anything. He asks if we have medicine or cloth.”

I shook my head. “We can't afford to spare either, so tell him 'no' to the first, and let him know that our supply of cloth is not in excess to the point of trading it. What else?”

After a moment, Kunomo shook his head. “He asks to know what we can offer. I do not believe we have much in excess at this time. He says they need little food, but supplies such as the medicine and cloth are in short supply.”

“Hmmm...” I felt we were at an impass. We couldn't part with what little medicine we had, and while we could possibly spare some cloth, it would make me uncomfortable. If he didn't seek food, I wasn't sure what else we could offer besides a few cases of the wine.

Tok cut into my thoughts. “He asks for a few moments of time to see our village, asks if I could show him around.”

I nodded and watched as Tok led the two men to the huts and the stream. I followed a few feet behind. “He is amazed at the water run into the buildings, and the work to divert the stream. He has only seen such things when visiting an island of white men many years ago.”

“Perhaps we can trade him knowledge, then? Would he consider that a fair part of the bargain.”

Tok waited for the response. “He is considering it.”

I popped into the hut and rolled a joint while Tok showed them our camp-side gardens and Hakee's drying racks. I returned with the joint lit and passed it to Tok.

The men's eyes lit up, big grins on their faces. Tok said, “I think you may have stumbled into a piece of this puzzle, my friend. They ask if we would consider trading them marijuana seeds, perhaps some of its fruits, as well.”

I recalled the pounds and pounds of dried bud we had around the camp and in storage in the North. We had more than we could possibly use, and we could always grow more fairly quickly. I nodded, said, “absolutely. Let's sit by the fire and talk details.”

We were into our second joint and third cups of wine by the time we'd hashed out a deal. Kunomo would put forth twelve big bags of wheat flour and two of rice, fourteen bags of dried citrus, another four of dried beans. In exchange, we'd give him twelve gallons of wine, along with a bag of flour made from the tubers. We'd give him eight overstuffed bags of marijuana, as well as five hundred of the original seeds. The plants were full of seeds, so they'd have more than enough to fill a large field with the crop.

We also threw in one bolt of rough cloth when Kunomo said he wasn't certain he could include the beans in the deal. We didn't have an excess, but I felt we could afford to give it to them in trade in order to get the beans. Additionally, we agreed to give them instructions on how to build a diverted stream as well as blueprints for how to construct a plumbing system similar to our own.

I shook Kunomo's hand, smiled at him. “Pleasure trading with you.”

While he and his brother returned to the boat to begin offloading the trade items, I found Amy and Hakee still waiting in the trees. “Everything ok, Kal? We didn't want to come down until you said to.”

“Seems to be fine. They're traders, from an island to the Southwest. Think we found a good deal that works for both of us. Come on down, we've got some things to gather for them. Hakee, do you mind going to collect the others? I'm sure they are quite frightened and worried about us by now.”

The teen nodded and sprinted up the stream and disappeared.

The men had brought a quarter of the items on shore, stared only a moment as Amy walked nakedly down to the fire. The men's skin was darker brown, more like Tok than the others. I wondered how far back in time the two peoples shared a common ancestor.

It took most of an hour to offload the bags of grain and other items. By then, the rest of the islanders had returned with Hakee and stood watching nearby. The men glanced from time to time at the naked people near the fire, but they said nothing and showed no disrepect in their looks.

Together with Amy and Tok, we gathered the items which we offered in trade. Kunomo nodded when he inspected the goods, and the men soon had them loaded onto their boat.

Tok and I stood talking with Kunomo as the last bag was hauled up onto their deck, and I asked about the white men on boats. He replied, through Tok, “they stole much of our cloth and medicine, but thankfully took little from our food supplies. We fought them but they had guns more powerful than ours, and several of my friends were killed. We managed to fight them off eventually, and they went North, probably to one of the other islands. We've seen their boats often in the distance, but only once did they come onshore.”

I took in his words, wondered, as had the military in Papeete, what the men were doing heading North. It was beyond my small world, though, to get too deeply into those thoughts. I just hoped they never decided to stop, again, at my home.

I went into the wrecked boat hatch and brought back one of the remaining bottles of scotch, offered it as a gift for Kunomo. He thanked me, and as he turned to leave, Kate walked up, offered him a shark's tooth necklace. He thanked her, slipped it over her neck, and gave her a peck on the cheek.

Kunomo asked us if he could return from time to time to trade and visit, and we agreed that we'd like that. We pleaded with him to not reveal our location or our presence there as we sought greatly to just be left alone. He agreed, asked if we would like to visit his village some day and whether he might bring some of his people to visit with us.

Tok said, “I might like that, Kal. Maybe Gale and I can go and see their people. Trade stories and learn about them. I've always had an interest in our people's history. I think I'd like that.”

I agreed it might be something to consider, wasn't wholly sold on the idea, but Tok and Gale were ultimately free to make that decision on their own. I told him, “as to visitors... I suppose... Do you think their culture might... accept what we do here?”

Tok knew what I was implying, said, “perhaps. I believe that they will not find it repulsive, at worst.”

We let Kunomo know that we would consider both ideas, and he bid us farewell. Tok, Kate, and I stood watching the men pull up the anchor and turn the boat, heading back toward their island to the Southwest.

In many ways, it was a nice interaction. Not often did someone come to the island with only peaceful commerce in mind. It also heartened me to know that other villages had survived the bugs and the armed men who threatened everyone's existence. Perhaps knowing there were more like us made it easier to have hope for the world.

Whatever it was, I had no plans to go anywhere. I found island life peaceful, comfortable, and with the loved ones around me, I had not a care to be anywhere else.

Kate whispered in my ear, “Tok invited me to share a night with them later...”

She didn't ask my permission, and I smiled when I realized she'd become comfortable enough to know that she didn't need it. “Wonderful. I think you'll enjoy that greatly.”

I kissed her, saw the knowing look in Tok's eye. We each took a hand and walked with Kate back to the fire. Hakee had a vegetable stew bubbling and we ate together, excited by the new visitors. Gale loved the idea of visiting Uhonamona with Tok, thought having some of their people stay with us might be a good way to exchange knowledge and history.

Later, I bathed with Amy and Keekah while Bailey fed Katie from her breast on the shore.

“Say, Kal, seeing as how Kate is going to spend the night with Tok and Gale,” Amy said with a smile, “it's been a long time since just the four of us had some time to ourselves...”

I laughed, “my sweet perv. I'm up for it, you know me.”

I took Katie while Bailey bathed, sang to her a while before putting her into her crib in the hut. The girls joined me on the bed, and moments later, hands and lips were moving over warm, excited flesh.

Keekah and I kissed while Amy slid between Bailey's legs, my young wife trembling with arousal. Amy fingered her as she licked, my own fingers finding Keekah's sex already slick, and I pushed inside her, a gasp coming from her lips. Amy stroked me while she licked Bailey's hairy pussy, the sixteen-year old mewling as her tongue explored the girl's sex.

I slid down Keekah's body, lapped up the creamy discharge within. Bailey moaned and came as Amy's tongue circled her clit, two fingers inside her vagina. Keekah watched with a smile, moaning, her own body tensing quickly. Amy moved up and kissed Bailey, shared the fourteen-year old's cream with her. That sent Keekah over the top, her body rocking as her moans filled my ears.

Bailey slid out from under Amy, pushed the girl onto her back, and returned the favor, Amy's eyes closed as my young wife lapped her tender flesh.

I rose over Keekah, slid into her hot, tight hole. I wondered if she might still be ovulating, wasn't sure exactly how many days that might last. Still, notions of impregnating her once more thrilled me and quickly I unloaded my seed into the brown-skinned girl's vagina. Keekah rocked with me, drawing her legs up as I withdrew and sank next to Amy, the half-Asian teen moaning through an orgasm with Bailey between her thighs.

I rose and moved behind Bailey's upturned ass, caressing her soft flesh and dipping two fingers into her hole. She crawled up and over Amy, kissed her, their breasts pressed together, Bailey's nipples leaking milk over Amy's tits.

I slid into Bailey's pussy, felt her stiffen as I began to stroke. Keekah alternated kissing the two lovers, her hands running over Bailey's ass and spreading milk over Amy's tits and stomach. I pulled out, shifted Bailey forward a foot or so, felt my penis brush against Amy's slit, and I pushed myself inside the sixteen-year old, her creamy discharge quickly mixing with Bailey's own juices on my length.

I moved again, back to Bailey's pussy, felt her strain as Keekah's fingers rolled over her clit. The fourteen-year old came, bucking, pushing me out of her body as her cunt spasmed and clenched. I drove myself back into Amy's vagina, felt myself grow tight and my release become imminent.

I cried out, my hands on Bailey's ass, my cock in Amy's pussy, and I came again, semen rushing out to splash inside the fifteen-year old's hole. Amy writhed into orgasm as I unloaded, Keekah's fingers finding her clit and moving quickly above my penetration.

She relaxed, sharing kisses with both girls as I softened and withdrew. Keekah took my spot as I lay to the side. My hands slid over Bailey's leaking breasts and spread more of her milk over Amy's tits and abdomen. Amy took one of the fourteen-year old's swollen nipples in her mouth and drank from the girl with a smile on her face. Keekah lapped up the cum in Amy's cunt and the pale teen came again from the attention.

Keekah curled up beside me, cum and pussy juice coating her grin. Bailey settled next to Amy, purring softly, her fingers lightly running over the milky mess on Amy's stomach.

Yet another whirlwind day on the island. Frightening moments followed by new friendships and then a nostalgic shared experience with three of my lovers. Like many times before, I wondered what surprises would find us in the days and weeks to come.
